STRING AUDITIONS
Prospective New Members
2012 Spring Semester

String auditions for new prospective members for the 2012 spring semester of the Austin Youth Orchestra (AYO) program will be held as follows:

• Monday, December 5, 2011 (All Orchestras)
• Monday, January 16, 2012 (Concertante Orchestra Only)
• Stephen F. Austin High School
• 1715 West Cesar Chavez Street
• 6:00 PM: Registration
• 6:30 PM: Auditions

Membership in AYO is open to all interested orchestra students from throughout the central Texas area – public school, private school, charter school, and homeschool – and will be determined by the audition process. Students from schools with orchestra programs must be a member in their school orchestra.

The various orchestras accommodate different levels of experience, playing ability, and age groupings:

• Symphony Orchestra (Grade 8 and above), String/Full Orchestra
• Philharmonic Orchestra (Grade 6 and above), String/Full Orchestra
• Sinfonietta Orchestra (Grade 4 and above), String Orchestra
• Camerata Orchestra (Grade 3 and above), String Orchestra
• Intermezzo Orchestra (Grades 2 and above), String Orchestra
• Concertante Orchestra (Kindergarten and above; spring semester only), String Orchestra

Audition material is a solo piece or etude of the student’s choice that demonstrates a maximum level of ability. Scales and sightreading may also be required. Students auditioning for the Concertante Orchestra may use (but not required) "Minuet 1" by J.S. Bach in Suzuki Book One. There is a $10.00 audition fee for new prospective AYO members. Cash or checks made payable to "AISD" will be accepted.

If accepted into the AYO program, there is a $100.00 per semester tuition fee for each participating member. In return for this nominal fee, members will receive comprehensive and intensive orchestral instruction, including regular performances at various venues of the highest quality of literature.

Rehearsals for the six orchestras are held weekly on Monday evenings at the locations/times indicated below:

• Symphony Orchestra – Austin High School , 7:00-9:00 PM
• Philharmonic Orchestra – Austin High School , 7:00-9:00 PM
• Sinfonietta Orchestra – O. Henry Middle School, 7:15-8:30 PM
• Camerata Orchestra – O. Henry Middle School, 6:00-7:00 PM
• Intermezzo Orchestra – O. Henry Middle School, 6:00-7:00 PM
• Concertante Orchestra – Austin High School , 6:00-7:00 PM (spring semester only)

Winds and percussion for the Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra are selected/invited for AYO membership (not auditioned by AYO) based on the results of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 18 and 26 Orchestra (or Band) auditions.

The AYO program was established in 1993 to enhance orchestral music education in the central Texas area. Orchestra students of all ages are encouraged to audition for the Austin Youth Orchestras as membership in these musical organizations will be an enriching, rewarding, and enjoyable experience.
