AYO auditions for advancement will be held only once per year at the end of the AYO season during the month of May. Advancement auditions will not occur immediately prior to the AYO season (September) or during mid-season (December/January).

STRING AUDITIONS FOR ADVANCEMENT
Current String Members
2012-2013 Season

String auditions for current members of the Austin Youth Orchestra (AYO) program wishing to advance for the 2012-2013 season will be held as follows:

  • Monday, May 7, 2012
    Stephen F. Austin High School
    1715 West Cesar Chavez Street
    6:00 PM: Registration
    6:30 PM: Auditions

Current string members of the AYO program may audition for the next level orchestra according to the AYO policies and procedures outlined below:

The various orchestras accommodate different levels of experience, playing ability, and age groupings:

  • Symphony Orchestra (Grade 8 and above), String/Full Orchestra
  • Philharmonic Orchestra (Grade 6 and above), String/Full Orchestra
  • Sinfonietta Orchestra (Grade 4 and above), String Orchestra
  • Camerata Orchestra (Grade 3 and above), String Orchestra
  • Intermezzo Orchestra (Grades 2 and above), String Orchestra
  • Concertante Orchestra (Kindergarten and above; spring semester only), String Orchestra

Audition material is a solo piece or etude of the student's choice that demonstrates a maximum level of ability. Scales and sightreading may also be required.

There is a $5.00 audition fee for current AYO members wishing to advance. Any AYO string member may audition for advancement for the ensuing AYO season during the month of May if the student meets the grade level requirement for the next level orchestra (conductors' approval not required).

Winds and percussion for the Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra are selected/invited for AYO membership (not auditioned by AYO) based on the results of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 18 and 26 Orchestra (or Band) auditions. Symphony Orchestra winds and percussion must qualify for the TMEA Region 18 or 26 High School Orchestra (or Band); Philharmonic Orchestra winds/percussion must qualify for the TMEA Region 18 or 26 Middle School Orchestra (or Band).

Complete and submit in advance of the auditions the online string audition registration form posted below. Download the completed online string audition registration form and bring a hard copy of the registration form to the auditions. For additional information, contact the AYO administrative staff:

The Austin Youth Orchestra program requires that all string students from schools with orchestra programs be a member in good standing in their school orchestra.

There is a $5.00 audition fee for current AYO members wishing to advance. Cash or checks made payable to "AISD" will be accepted.
